NHS Cleanliness Standards 2025 - What You Need to Know

This year, the NHS has raised the bar on cleanliness across healthcare settings. On 5 February 2025, NHS England released the National Standards of Healthcare Cleanliness 2025, replacing the 2021 version. These changes affect hospitals, GP surgeries, care settings – and for the first time – ambulance and patient transport services. Key Updates in the 2025 Healthcare Standards

You can of course read the full NHS cleanliness standards for 2025, but it can sometimes be difficult to establish the key headlines when new legislation is introduced. On this occasion, we've done the hard work for you:


  • Ambulances Included - cleaning protocols now cover vehicles;


  • Area-based Functional Risk Cleaning - standards emphasise maintaining cleanliness across full functional areas (not just individual items);


  • Star Ratings on Display - sites (excluding ambulances which is optional) must now show star ratings in patient-facing areas, making cleanliness performance visible to staff, patients and visitors;


  • Audits on Process Not Just Outcomes - checks now look at how cleaning is done (technique, PPE, chemicals) as well as the results;


  • Commitment to Cleanliness Charter - every healthcare setting must display a charter outlining responsibilities and standards.
