Safeguarding in Schools: Why Robust HR Practices Matter
Safeguarding in education is not an optional extra — it is a shared responsibility for everyone working in a school environment. As a service provider supporting over 170 schools across the South of England, we recognise that contractors are held to the same safeguarding expectations as school staff.
From an HR perspective, safeguarding is not simply a set of checks. It is a culture embedded throughout recruitment, training and day to day conduct. Our approach is aligned with Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE) to help schools maintain a safe and compliant environment.

Safer Recruitment: Getting it Right from the Start
Effective safeguarding begins with safer recruitment. For all staff working in schools, we complete:
- Enhanced DBS checks, including Children’s Barred List checks where required
- Identity and right to work verification
- Employment references confirming suitability to work with children
- Overseas criminal record checks where applicable
- Clear records of all checks
These steps ensure individuals are thoroughly vetted before beginning work in an educational setting.
Supporting Single Central Record (SCR) Requirements
Schools must maintain an accurate Single Central Record, and documentation must meet the expectations of Ofsted, Trust Boards and auditors.
We help by providing written confirmation of:
- Type of DBS check completed
- Date checks were carried out
- Barred list information (where relevant)
- Identity and right to work status
Our processes help schools keep their SCR compliant and up to date. For most offices, daily professional cleaning is recommended.
Supervision and Safe Deployment
Where a DBS certificate is pending, appropriate supervision and risk controls are put in place.
Clear communication with schools ensures shared expectations from day one.
Training and Professional Conduct
Safeguarding continues well beyond recruitment. All school-based operatives receive safeguarding training during induction, covering:
- Professional boundaries
- Appropriate behaviour within school settings
- Immediate reporting of concerns
- School specific safeguarding procedures
Contracts Managers reinforce these expectations during routine site visits and audits.
Alongside daily maintenance, offices benefit from regular deep cleans.
Responding When Concerns Arise
If a safeguarding concern is raised, we act quickly and responsibly. This includes:
- Conducting a thorough investigation
- Working closely with school leaders
- Referring matters to statutory bodies or the DBS where required
- Implementing disciplinary action if appropriate
Our priority is always the safety and wellbeing of children.

Embedding Safeguarding into Everyday Practice
Safeguarding is not a single policy or checklist. It is a continuous process involving HR, Operations and Compliance working together to maintain and strengthen standards.
We understand the expectations placed on schools, from governors to Ofsted, and the importance of robust documentation and safe working practices.
Safeguarding is, above all, a culture. One that we are committed to upholding every day.
