Meet DEBRA
As a
commercial cleaning company, we have an extremely varied customer base. We began cleaning for DEBRA in December 2012 and this month is particularly significant for them as a charity.
What does DEBRA stand for?
This charity was founded in 1978, by Phillis Hilton whose daughter Debra was diagnosed with EB.
What is Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB)?
EB is a group of currently incurable genetic skin conditions which cause the skin to blister and tear at the slightest touch. In some cases it also affects internal linings and organs. In its most severe forms, EB is fatal. Even in its least severe forms it can still cause lifelong disability and pain.
What are DEBRA’s aims?
DEBRA is the national charity that supports individuals and families affected by EB. We have a vision of a world where no one suffers from this devastating condition. Until that day, we offer specialist care to those who need it, we give support to people and families living with EB and we provide real hope for the future by funding pioneering research which will one day find a cure.
When is EB awareness week?
EB is often described as the ‘worst condition you’ve never heard of’. During EB awareness week (25th-31st October) we are encouraging people to buy a DEBRA butterfly badge as part of our ‘Wear Your Wings’ campaign to help generate greater recognition of this devastating condition which affect over 5,000 people in the UK. People living with EB have skin as fragile as a butterfly – the slightest knock can cause painful blisters and open wounds.
What can we do to help?
Butterfly badges can be purchased at any one of over 100 DEBRA Charity shops for a suggested donation of £2 or you can add a badge (Twibbon) to your social profile.
You can support DEBRA by text donating: EBAW14 £5 to 770070 or by going to www.justgiving.com/EBAW
What do you do with the funds raised?
Funds raised will help us continue to fund vital research into EB with the aim of finding effective treatments and ultimately, a cure. It will enable us to provide support on a daily basis including an enhanced specialist EB healthcare service in partnership with the NHS, specialist equipment provision, a community support and advocacy service and specially adapted holiday homes, providing families with EB some much needed respite.
